2015 is the 31st year that Boy Scout Troop #112 has coordinated a Holiday Food and Gift Basket program in Glide.   With the help of numerous community volunteers, the troop brings holiday cheer to hundreds of Glide area residents.

Scouting for Food

Though the Scouts ramrod this event, countless community members join in the effort.  Honor Society students from Glide High School, volunteers from Helping Hands Food Pantry, and dozens of caring citizens give their time, talent, and financial resources.  Tons of food items are donated by generous community members and more are purchased with donated money.  Community members also pick tags from the Angel Tree and buy Christmas presents for children and seniors.

It is truly inspiring  how our community rallies behind this project.  Neighbors reaching out to help neighbors.

Only days before the process began, Glide was covered in snow.
This put everyone in a holiday spirit.

Thursday afternoon a crew of community volunteers
label and set out empty boxes.

While boxes are being labeled,
another crew is unloading purchased food.

Fine tuning the labels.

Friday morning begins with sorting tons of community-donated non-perishable goods and bagging fresh produce.  Glide High School Honor Society students join the Scouts in this massive effort.

Distributing spuds looks like fun!

A Scout attentively listens to directions.

Lots of action by lots of very
enthusiastic young men and women.

Oops!  Hard to handle all those cans at once.

There are tons of canned goods to be sorted and boxed.

Time for a break.

Lunch at last.
The scoutmaster's wife makes sure all
those helpers have lots to eat and drink.

At last, all of the food has been boxed.
Well most of the food.
Perishables will be handled Saturday morning.

Saturday morning, instructions are given for how the day will go.
It also includes a serious safety talk.
Number one rule for the day: Be safe, but have fun.

A lot of empty cardboard boxes are generated.
They have to be flattened, loaded in the truck,
then hauled to the transfer site.

The turkey brigade:
Unloading a hundred turkeys from
the pickup truck into the gym.
Each box contains 2 turkeys, each weighing about 17 pounds.
Serious muscle-building exercise.

Rolling 'em out to happy recipients.

Here's to the ladies that worked all day in the cold.
